Rehabilitative Exercise
Abnormal posture and spinal alignment can cause muscles to change position and adapt to that position over an extended period of time. 'Mirror Image' exercises are designed to change the affected muscles back to their normal lengths.
We teach our patients special 'mirror image' exercises designed just for them to help strengthen and correct their own unique posture problem. These exercises can be performed in the office or the comfort of your own home and are an important part of the corrective process.
Rehabilitative Traction
Abnormal posture causes ligaments that surround the spine to deform over time. Due to their specific mechanical properties, ligaments do not often respond well to adjustments alone. Consequently, the primary purpose of rehabilitative traction is to cause the ligaments to stretch back to their normal shape over a period of time. Causing a permanent change in the shape of the ligaments allows the spine to 'hold' the correction.
A variety of traction methods are currently used in our office. These methods may require traction times that range from 10 to 20 minutes, according to the doctor’s discretion and patient tolerance. Many patients also receive a home traction device so that they may actively participate in their recovery program.
